The Cave at Makkedah
Adoni-zedek sees and knows—
“Are we done for? We must arise!
Gibeon surrendered out of fear—
Two strong cities, Jericho and Ai
Crushed and burned.
Come you kings of the Amorites,”
Of the cities Hebron,
Jarmuth, Lachish, Eglon,
With himself from Jerusalem,
The five kings of the Amorites,
“The Israelites rest far away,
So it’s time to teach
Gibeon and the fearful ones
A lesson they won’t soon forget.”
The plan fails;
Armies routed;
Hailstones hurled;
The sun standing still.
“To the cave at Makkedah!”
Went the five kings,
Which held till it didn’t,
Whereupon it became their grave.
