Abiathar

Scurrying for my life—others dying—the ephod remembered—
Worth my life—I and it escaped to David—
My friend forever—with his band of runaways—

Young David knew Yahweh’s voice—yet he honored the ephod—
A symbol of approach to a God abandoning kings—choosing kings—
We sought him—and strode the wilderness—silence and voice—

At kingship of my friend I was granted service—priesthood—
High priest of a nation built of tribes—ephod—wandering tent—lost ark—
People of a mind—each—a God to claim them—

David served through his sickbed—Solomon succeeding—a fact I did not know—
Prophecy overriding—my supposition wrong—the eldest living son—not chosen—
David on his deathbed granted—to my belated joy—his last desire—
